Leather Covered Tin

A circular tin, covered with red leather, and decorated with inlayed geometric bands of woven red and undyed fibres. This example is typical of Muslim Sierra Leonean leatherwork in the provinces, commonly known as Mandingo . The original notes from the donor described it as a Cigarette Cup . The tin was collected by C.D. Hotobah During, a well-known Krio Barrister who spent many years based in Freetown.
