Brass Messenger's Staff

A brass Messenger's Staff, used by the colonial Department of Native Affairs (DNA) prior to the proclamation of the Sierra Leone Protectorate in 1896. The colonial government kept up communication with local chiefs by sending messages through official messengers who carried these staffs as a sign of office. It is surmounted by the British coat of arms and bears the letters DNA SIERRA LEONE . It was donated to the Sierra Leone Museum by Mr A. Meredith of the Colonial Secretariat.
