Photographic Print

Black and white photographic print showing Rotifunk, a Temne town in the Bumpe chiefdom. Pa Sorie, or Suro Kessebe is mentioned in the back of the photograph, who was a Loko warrior who came to Bumpe from the north. He was rewarded with the chiefship of Rotifunk for his services in defending Bumpe from the Temne of Yoni chiefdom in the 19th century. The women’s auxiliary of the American United Brethren in Christ Mission made their headquarters at Rotifunk. This photo is part of a collection from an album put together by William Vivian in 1889; Vivian was a Missionary with the United Methodist Free Churches, and is likely to have taken the photographs himself. This is an albumen print.
