Carved Wooden Stool
A caryatid carved wooden stool. Caryatid refers to a platform, supported by figures. This example is supported by two male figures, and two female figures. Three of the figures wear waist bands, two made out of plaited fibre string, and one with black glass beads. Though the provenance of this stool is attributed to Mali, Nigeria or Sierra Leone, the style is similar to caryatid Sapi-Portuguese salt cellars, suggesting it is likely to be Sierra Leonean.
