Black and white photographic print depicting three sampa girls wearing bunjue. A bunjue is a musical instrument worn around the waists of dancing girls, or Sampa , initiated into the Sande (Mende) or Bundu (Temne) society. Written in pencil on the back of the image is 36 / The Bunjue , danced by women in Upper Mendi / Alldridge Neg hist No 36 . Published as Figure 67 in T. J. Alldridge, 1901, The Sherbro and Its Hinterland (London: Macmillan). Alldridge notes that the photograph was taken in a place he records as Befuin, where he was treated to a country dance the like of which [he] had never seen . Same as BMAG:WA900245.
