(often written Susu) An ethno-linguistic group of Mande origin that straddle Sierra Leone' western border with the Republic of Guinea. Within Sierra Leone today they are mainly confined to Kambia district. They are closely related to the Yalunka (q.v.) and, like them, claim to have originated in Futa Jallon, but they have been settled in the lowlands of Guinea since at least the 16th century. By the middle of the 18th century the eastern Sosos (those living around the Scarcies, Melakori and Forekaria rivers) had been converted to Islam under the influence of Muslim missionaries and were generally referred to as Mandingoes (q.v.). Their state, Moriah, had as its capital Forekaria.
