Embroidered Cap

This high cap is made from six pieces of un-dyed cotton, with an indigo blue design woven into the weft. The body of the cap has a central band with a diamond design, and is bordered with zigzag embroidery; whilst the top is composed of five pieces of cotton with a zigzag weft along the seams. Is was acquired by Inspector Bannerman-Phillips from Chief Santigui Mahdi, who is thought to have been a Temne chief along the southern Temne-Mende border in 1888.
