Mori Whip

A Mori leatherwork whip. It has a finely plaited leather whip ending in a triple plait with lashes. The handle is bound with finely plaited leather and a creased skin centre. It has a leather plaited button on the loop at the junction of the whip and the handle. Mori or Mandingo leatherwork is traditionally associated with Muslim elites and comes from the Northern Province of Sierra Leone. See Alldridge's The Sherbro and its Hinterland, 1901, page195, for more information.
