Fish Trap
This is a fish trap, or mbumbue in Mende. It is made from palm thatch that is woven together to form a trap; it works by enabling fish to swim into it, but preventing them from swimming out. Mbumbue, such as this one, are placed in rivers and streams, facing up-stream, to catch the fish. The Sierra Leone National Museum register also records the name of the trap as a kaiyoi or hoohoi .
