Photographic Print
Black and white photographic print of two carvings in the form of stylised female figures, potentially minsereh , or min figures. Min figures are traditionally used as part of the Yasi (Bullom) or Njayei (Mende) society for curing sickness. They contain spiritual power which is given to the figure by members of the society, rather than the carver. Written in pencil on the back of the image is 32 / Fig. 51, p. 148 / Minsereh fetish images used in connection with the Yassi medicine / Alldridge Neg List No 32 . Published as Figure 51 in T. J. Alldridge, 1901, The Sherbro and Its Hinterland (London: Macmillan). These figures were acquired by the British Museum and correspond to BM:Af.1901.722.4 and BM:Af.1901.722.6.
