Written in pencil on the back of the image Fig. 77, p.298 / The chief of Kukuna - Alimami Bassi - surrounded by his people (Mohammedans). Tonko Limba Country . Published as Figure 77 in T. J. Alldridge, 1901, The Sherbro and Its Hinterland (London: Macmillan). Alldridge writes: The chief of [Kukuna] was the Alimami Bassi, who is sitting in the middle of Figure 77, in a white gown. In front of him sits his yele man, or musician, with his balenjeh. ... In this picture will be seen several people wearing gree-gree charms hanging from their necks. ... It will be noticed that two of the men are carrying umbrellas. Umbrellas would appear to be one of the first imported articles necessary to a native, irrespective of tribe, as soon as he comes into contact with the civilising trading establishments (pp.298-99).
