Plaster Cast of the De Ruyter Stone
This is a plaster cast of the De Ruyter Stone, FreetownÕs oldest monument. The stone shows inscriptions made by the Dutch Admiral, De Ruyter, when he landed on the coast of Freetown in 1664. The actual stone lies buried 6 feet underground, just above the high water mark at the King Jimmy Market, near the Connaught Hospital. The inscription reads: ÒM.A. Ruyter. I. C. Mellon, Vice Admiral, West Fries, Vant A.D. 1664Ó. The plaster cast was made by Gary Schulze, a US Peace Corps volunteer who was based at the Sierra Leone Museum in the early 1960s.
