Gongoli Mask
A large gongoli, or kongoli, mask. The gongoli masquerader comes out to provide light entertainment, particularly during more solemn occasions such as funerals. It is not particular to any cultural groups in Sierra Leone. This mask has unusually refined features for a gongoli, which are typically more roughly carved and animal-like in appearance. It is also unusual for the degree of decoration, including earrings, costume jewellery and what are described as Xmas decorations on its forehead. It is attached to a particularly fine raffia cloack and the National Museum's accession registers shows that it originally wore two pairs of sunglasses! The mask was made by Joseph Sandi, who was previously a member of the Sierra Leone Dance Troupe with which he visited the UK in 1967.
