Margai and Stevens Carving
This is a wooden carving marking Sierra Leone's transition into a republic in 1971. The first part depicts Sierra Leone's two prominent post-colonial leaders, Sir Milton Margai (inscription 1960 SIR M. MARGAI 1ST P.M. ) and Dr. Siaka Stevens (inscription 3RD P.M. DR S. STEVENS ). Margai and Stevens are connected by a carved chain, attached to which are two blocks, the first reads SIR ALBERT MARGAI (Sir Milton's brother and Sierra Leone's 2nd Prime Minister) and the second N.R.C (National Reformation Council, a group of senior military officers led by Andrew Juxon-Smith who seized power in 1968 during a turbulent period in Sierra Leonean politics). A second part of the carving bears the inscription 1971 S.L. BECAME A REPUBLIC .
