Baga D mba Mask
This is a D mba [or Nimba] mask associated with the Baga people of Guinea. When worn, the weight of the mask, which is considerable, is carried on the shoulders. The dancer would see through the holes located between the breasts. It would have been worn with a rafia dress. They are among the most impressive of African masks. Originally they were danced at funerals, marriages and at harvest time. The Baga are closely associated with the Temne of Sierra Leone. This mask was part of John Akar's collection. It is not known whether he acquired it in Sierra Leone or Guinea.
