Photographic Print
Black and white photographic print of a man and a woman wearing loincloths and sitting on the ground. A rope around their necks ties them together, and a small child sits on the woman's legs. A second man wearing a robe sits on the ground next to them. Written in pencil on the back of the image is Fig. 70, p.208 / A slave dealer with slaves at Mongeri . Published as Figure 70 in T. J. Alldridge, 1901, The Sherbro and Its Hinterland (London: Macmillan). Alldridge writes: Upon arriving at the town of Mongeri, before reaching Konno, we found awaiting us a slave-dealer who had just been captured upon the road by the police. The party consisted of the slave-dealer, a man, a woman and her child, as shown in Figure 70 (p.268). The slaves were set free by Alldridge, and he goes on to explain, The slave-dealer considered it very hard upon him that he should be deprived of what he held to be his legitimate purchases; for, as he stated, he had bought the people near by and was then taking them to the Susu country, a French possession a long way off, to exchange them for cattle. He said he had paid eight pieces of cloth for the man, eight pieces for the woman, and three pieces for the child, the value of a piece of such cloth being probably three shillings (ibid.).
