Soso Kondingi playing
Ethnomusicological recording made by Cootje van Oven. Kondingi solo preceded by tuning of instrument. Three bows piercing part of a gourd, each bow with one string. See photograph for structure. Thumb of left hand used for plucking one string. The other two strings are caught between the knuckles of the right hand fingers, pulled and released. These knuckles are also used to knock the gourd. The Temne name of the instrument is konde, the Soso name kondingi. The strings are metal wires. Measurements: gourd is 13" by 7.5" (measured around the curve); Bows: 19", 19.5" and 15.5" long; Free length of strings 12.5", 12" and 10.5".
