Tabulay drumming
Ethnomusicological sound recording made by Cootje van Oven. The tabulay is used to call Muslims to prayer and also to call villagers to meetings. This was a brand new drum and the Chief of Mogbose had it demonstrated to Cootjhe van Oven and Herb Clark with the inevitable result that the villagers came streaming out, thinking they were being called to a meeting. The diameter of the cow-hide drumskin was 22.5", the height of the drum 24". The drum was hung upon two poles by means of rope and beaten by two people hitting it in turn with ropes ending in leather pouches filled with stones.
